Why practice one skill at a time

A whole conversation hides the part that is holding you back.

In a full call a strong opening can cover a weak close, and you can’t tell which habit cost you the sale. Practicing one skill in isolation makes the weakness visible and gives you a clear thing to change, then a score at the same level to show whether it worked.

Cander isolates the skill for you. Each exercise puts you in a short, specific situation where that skill is the whole job: finding out what a customer really needs, answering “it costs too much” without discounting, or turning “sounds good” into a dated next step.

How it works

Four steps, about eight minutes.

  1. Choose a skill

Start from a recommendation or pick any of the skills. You see exactly what you will be scored on first.

  2. Talk to the customer

A spoken conversation with an AI customer whose situation and held-back concerns are built to test that skill.

  3. Get scored on that skill

Four criteria, each backed by quotes from your own transcript, plus one thing to try next time.

  4. Clear the level

Score 70 or more to clear a level, then move up to a more demanding customer.

Real skills, real criteria

Each skill has its own scorecard.

These are five of the 13 skills, with the criteria and weights each one is actually scored on. Each skill has exercises in 6 industries.

Adapts to difficulty

Four levels. Harder customers, same fair standard.

  1. Level 1

    Beginner

A cooperative customer who states their concern clearly.

  2. Level 2

    Intermediate

A customer with more than one concern, who needs thoughtful questions to open up.

  3. Level 3

    Advanced

A skeptical customer who pushes back and brings competing concerns.

    Part of Pro

  4. Level 4

    Expert

A demanding customer with layered objections who rewards close listening and punishes filler.

    Part of Pro

Your score is judged on what you did, not on how hard the customer was. Difficulty is carried by the level, so a strong Beginner score shows Beginner, never Expert, and a lower score at a harder level is not a decline. Improvement is only ever claimed from scores at the same skill and level.

Realistic customers

Customers who respond to you, not to a script.

The AI customer speaks and reacts to what you say. It has a real situation, facts it won’t contradict, and concerns it holds back until you earn them with good questions or trust. It can’t invent new prices or objections, so you are tested on the skill, not on surprises.

Feedback you can check

Every quote is checked against your transcript.

Each criterion gets a score and the moments behind it, in your own words, plus a stronger line to try. Quotes that can’t be found in your transcript are dropped before you see them, and the score is calculated from the criteria and their weights.

Personalized recommendations

Practice picked from your real weaknesses.

Cander recommends what to practice from three kinds of evidence, strongest first: your real sales calls (when an audit includes them), your recent exercises, and your full practice calls. Each recommendation says why, with the number and where it came from, for example “Objection handling scored 42 across 3 real calls.” With no evidence yet, it offers starting points and says so.

That is how a weakness found in a real call becomes targeted practice: each competency a real-call report flags for practice links to the Focused Performance skill that trains it. See real call analysis.

For teams

Assign it. See who is improving.

Managers assign a skill at a level to salespeople and see scores, levels cleared and where the team is stuck, skill by skill, without seeing transcripts or audio.

Questions about Focused Performance

How is this different from a full practice call?
A full practice call tests everything at once and gives you one score across six areas. Focused Performance isolates one skill with a customer built to test exactly that skill, scores it on that skill's own four criteria, and tracks it level by level. Use focused practice to fix a weakness and full calls to check it all still works together.
Does the AI customer just follow a script?
No. It speaks and reacts to what you say. It has a scripted situation and held-back concerns that come out only when you earn them with good questions or trust, and it can't invent new prices, objections or facts. That keeps practice realistic and fair.
How is it scored, and is an easy customer an easy score?
Each exercise is scored 0 to 100 on that skill's own criteria, judged on what you did, not on how hard the customer was. 70 or more clears a level. Difficulty is carried by the level (Beginner to Expert), so an easy customer can't inflate your score and a hard one can't make you look worse.
How do I know the feedback is grounded?
Every quote in your result is checked against your actual transcript before it is shown, and anything that can't be found is dropped. The score is worked out from the criteria and their weights, not stated by the model.
What does it cost?
Focused Performance is part of Cander. Exercises count toward your monthly calls, Beginner and Intermediate levels are free, and Advanced and Expert levels are part of Pro. Exercises a manager assigns on a Teams plan don't use your personal calls.
Can my team use it?
Yes. On a Teams plan managers assign an exercise at a level to salespeople and see scores, levels cleared and where the team is stuck, skill by skill. They see scores and criteria, never transcripts or audio.
